'The Kombuis' as the restaurant is affectionately known, is owned by Yusuf and Nazli and they call themselves total Bo-Kaapers –they were born and raised there and have made a life for themselves there.
They host politicians, ambassadors, VIP’s, tourists from all the Continents and also a diversity of South Africans. Those clients are all flocking to the Kombuis for one thing : authentic Cape Malay Cuisine. The couple believe that it is this one factor that is the reason for the success of the Bo-Kaap Kombuis, because the food that is prepared is a reflection of the surrounding Bo-Kaap; its history, heritage and love for people regardless of race religion and creed.
Very recently two of the world’s great chefs requested Nazli to show them the art of Cape Malay Cuisine. The one is our very own Michelin Star award winner, Jan Hendrik v.der Westhuizen. The other is the Finnish double Michelin Star award winner, Hans Valimaki. Andrew Zimmern was the other international personality who hosted Nazli on his show, The BBC Travel Channel.
The amazing thing about the Bo-Kaap Kombuis is that the cuisine is prepared fresh daily. Normally this would raise the cost of food at an alarming rate , but Nazli and Yusuf explains that they want their food to be accessible to everyone, and not only people who can afford it. We want our food to be tasted by people of all walks of life.
Their dedicated staff is according to Yusuf, the heartbeat of the success story. All of them were general workers in their respective previous employment. When they came to the Kombuis, their talents were identified and Nazli took them painstakingly through a learning process. Currently they are budding chefs and as Yusuf always tell them, at any given moment, ‘’I want you when you leave the Kombuis one day, to be able to open up your own Restaurant.”
